Anti-Bullying Event

Dear Educators, Guidance Counselors, Teachers, and Community Activists,

A third of middle school and high school students have reported being bullied during the school year.

Almost 3 million students have said they were pushed, shoved, tripped, even spit on. It is also more likely to affect kids that are seen as different, whether it’s because of the color of their skin, the clothes they wear, the disability they may have, or sexual orientation.

The program in Law and Social Thought at the University of Toledo invites you to participate in Protecting Students: A Forum on Bullying.  It will be held on October 29 on the third floor of Snyder Memorial on the campus of the University of Toledo.

In response to the recent attention drawn to bullying and the desire of students at UT to connect with our community, we have put together a diverse list of speakers from many different backgrounds and with different areas of expertise.  Topics discussed will include cyberbullying and sexting, legal aspects of bullying, LGBT issues, gender issues, the characteristics of bullies and victims, and more.  The keynote address, by Dr. Morris Jenkins, will be on restorative justice and its possibilities for preventing bullying.

The forum will last from 9:30a.m.-4:00p.m.  Attendees will have the opportunity to select from different topics of interest each hour.  A light lunch will be provided in the afternoon.

Our goal is that everyone who attends the forum will walk away from the day with new ideas about the problem of bullying, new professional connections, and solutions that can be taken back to schools and communities.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to a productive and enlightening conference.  Please spread the word!  RSVP by October 22.
