April Counselors' Corner

Scheduling completed for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors:

Students have the option to make changes in these courses until June 15th.  After that, no changes will be made and all schedules are final.

NCAA for Future College Athletics:

Any junior planning on playing athletics at a Division 1 or Division II college should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at the end of their junior year.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Dippman.

College Visitation:

Your junior should be planning visitations to college campuses now.  This is a good time for parents and their high school juniors and seniors to take some weekend trips in order to take a quick, yet thorough look at the college choices.  Clay High School allows students to take Academic Days, whereby the student is excused for college visits.  The student must complete the teal colored academic Day Form (obtained in the Guidance Office), which will require verification of the visit on the college stationary.  Students are granted a maximum of 3 academic days.

Senior Upcoming Events:

A list of special guidance events, dates, and times is provided for your future reference.  You may want to save this list so that you may attend any or all of the events as they relate to your needs.

  • Cap and Gown Orders:  If you have not yet ordered a cap and gown for a graduating senior, you should do so as soon as possible as the price will change to $36.30 in April.  Cap and gown order forms can be picked up in the Guidance Center.
  • March 29, 2011, graduation announcements will be passed out during the lunch periods.  Students who did not receive them should inquire with Mrs. Nyitray, the school bookkeeper.
  • The first week of May the Caps and gowns will be passed out during the lunch periods.  After that, students should see their counselor.
  • Senior Honors Night – Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Applying to College for the Fall of 2010:  Seniors should have already applied to their selected colleges by this time.  Any senior who has not and needs to apply should see their counselor as soon as possible.

General Guidance Information:

ACT:
Juniors and seniors who intend to apply to college must take the ACT college test unless they plan to attend Owens Community College (but do not intend to major in a health-profession).  Test fee is $33;  the Act plus Writing is $48;  The following test will be offered:  Note that most colleges and universities have required or recommended the ACT Writing Test, so it is best to be prepared.

June 11, 2011     May 6, 2011 May 20, 2011

Although the ACT is the recommended test for college entrance in the Midwestern United States, a few students may wish to also take the SAT.  The Ivy League schools as well as military academies accept the ACT, yet students applying to those schools may wish to also send SAT scores.  The test fee for the SAT is $47.  The remaining dates for the SAT are as follows:

Credit Flexibility:
Credit Flexibility (Ohio Senate Bill 311) allows students at Clay High School the opportunity to move beyond a one-size-fits-all system of learning.  Ohio’s plan for credit flexibility is designed to broaden the scope of curricular options available to students, increase the depth of study possible for a particular subject, and allow tailoring of learning time and/or conditions.  These are ways in which aspects of learning can be customized around more of the students’ interests and needs.
General information and the district policy are outlined in the application.  The applications are available on our school website and in the guidance office.  Deadlines for the 2011-2012 school year are as follows:  1st semester – May 1, 2011 and 2nd semester – October 1, 2011.  Students should see their guidance counselor for more information.
