Art Department Update - November 2011

Art Foundations – Students are working on learning color theory and the application of color on basic forms. Such as: cones, cubes, cylinders, and spheres.

They are also learning techniques used to develop the illusion of form using hatching/crosshatching and stippling while working with pen. The culmination of the techniques acquired over the past three weeks will result in a mixed-media still life of basic forms. Some students are also working with clay to discover texture and form.

Ceramics & Sculpture - Students have finished their "Posable People" and are moving into metal works. The fun people sculptures are hanging out in the display cases - check them out!

Drawing & Painting - Students have finished their live vegetable drawings where they used a viewfinder to perfect compositions. These works were completed with charcoal pencils. The students are moving on to drawing popcorn from direct observation. After a fun "Popcorn Party", the students enlarged their best view and used chalk pastels to bring fun colors into their work.

Print-Making & Mixed-Media– Students have completed monotypes using both additive and subtractive methods. Look for these on display in the library media center and in the art hallway display cases. Our exploration in the world of altered books has begun with an altered coloring book. The students will develop these into art pieces using a variety of altered book techniques that adhere to the student artist’s chosen theme.

The Art Students of Clay High were treated to a presentation by Ms. Andrea Renner from the School of Advertising Art located in Kettering, Ohio. Students were exposed to the school, its course offerings, the artworks created by past students, and campus life. Sophomore Dominic Coleman felt the presentation was "pretty cool! It inspired me to draw more." The students were also given tips on how to create their portfolio for college admission. Our well behaved students packed the Drawing & Painting Studio for this multi-media presentation and left feeling energized and excited about art!
