Clay High School Art Department September Update

art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.
Thomas Merton

Art Foundations

Classes began the school year with a general introduction to art, the elements and principles of design and art history. Their first taste of working in the studio involved a basic block printing project folder cover design where painting skills were introduced and put into action. This fun and functional work of art allowed the students to learn the studio procedures for art production.  Some classes are working in their sketchbook to adorn the first page with a creative composition that uses their first name.

Ceramics & Sculpture

Students were introduced to the ceramics studio by constructing a pinch pot vessel the first week! They are in the beginning stages of creating a textured slab plate to be embellished with sculptural forms.

Drawing & Painting

Students were challenged to come up with one word to describe themselves. This word needed to be included in a self-portrait photograph in a unique way. We are also learning to construct hardbound portfolio pads from paper and board to be painted and covered with collage images of a muse reference.

Printmaking & Mixed Media

students are diving right in as they embark on a mixed-media composition that uses their first name as the focal point on the first page of their sketchbook. Their first print-making experience will be a linocut as they create a personal symbol that they will use periodically through the year in several mixed-media and printmaking exercises.

Congratulations to the following Northwest Ohio Focus Show Art Students:

Miles Carter, Kathrin Weishuhn, Danielle Jacobs (2 works of art), Kimberlyn Sharlow, Madeline Kelly, and Dustin Wooddell. Their artwork was chosen to represent the best of the best of high school art work in Northwest Ohio. The show will run from September 1st through the 18th at the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery on the campus of Bowling Green State University. The Clay High School Art Department is proud of your efforts!
