January//February Highlights:
Marco’s Pizza Night
Another successful Marco’s Pizza night took place on January 18. Please continue to order from Marco’s Pizza on our designated pizza night. Our school gets a percentage of the items sold. This month Coy received $138.00 from our Marco’s Pizza night. The money received from this fundraiser pays for our "Lunch with the Principal" monthly event. The class that has the highest pizza sales also wins a pizza party. Mrs. Spears’ class won the pizza party!
Outside Marquee We are thrilled to have our new sign out front of the school. There have been many positive comments about the positive communication that is taking place with our new sign. Please continue to check our sign out front for recent updates.
Coy Second Grade Teachers Stumble Across Rare Opportunity The Coy second grade teachers are finding themselves in a very fortunate position. BGSU professor, Penny Sobeleski, has partnered with Coy and our second grade teachers. Four of Mrs. Sobeleski's top graduate students, pursing their literacy coaching certification, will begin working with and co-teaching with our second grade teachers beginning January 30. Graduate students must complete 70 practicum hours to earn their certification. This means we will have the luxury of two certified teachers per second grade classroom from now through April 30 working together to try some new teaching techniques while at the same time enhancing current literacy practices. Everyone is equally excited about this great opportunity!
Power Verbs are Powering Up at Coy January 23 our Power Verb program kicked off for a second year in a row. Mrs. Deal, a current fifth grade teacher, researched a few years back to discover many of the same verbs used on the Ohio Achievement Assessments. All of the verbs were gathered and short, scripted classroom discussion activities were created for teachers to use on a daily basis immediately after morning announcements. A new “power verb” is introduced via our morning announcements every week. We attempt to utilize the verb as much as possible throughout the week. Our daily “power verb” initiative will continue through the administration of the OAA. Please ask your child what the "power verb" of the week is.
Coy Playground/Backfield Meeting Matt Medina, Coy parent, along with parent group members and Dean Sandwisch met on January 26 to further our discussion about improvements to our playground/backfield area. Discussion items included: adding a bridge to get to the backfield, additional parking, blocking off the island on the west side parking lot and blacktopping some of the muddy playground area. Most suggestions were proposed for the safety of all and to add additional play area for the students. Mr. Sandwisch suggested we hold off on any major decisions at this point as there will be upcoming discussions about the use of Permanent Improvement money for the district soon. However, some decisions have been approved through our PGA. Those decisions include: purchasing a tetherball pole, adding two cement platforms on the playground and purchasing a basketball backboard and pole. Our next meeting will be in conjunction with the March Coy PGA meeting on March 5 at 7:00 in the Coy Library. Please plan to attend!
Ram Drama Team Announces Next Musical The students are thrilled as the next Ram Drama Team musical was announced on Friday, January 24. Aladdin will be the next musical that will take place at Coy in May. Students will be receiving additional information soon about the specifics of the next musical. The musicals are always a great experience for all. Please look for more information to come home soon!
Mr. Earl Postcard Program Runs February 27-March 2
The Mr. Earl Postcard Program will begin February 27. The program entails students filling out postcards that can be sent out to friends and family. The school gets .50 for every completed postcard without any obligation to buy anything! Please make family and friends aware that they do not have to buy anything from this program after they receive the postcard in the mail. Money that is raised from this program is applied towards technology needs in our building. Thanks for all that are willing to help with this easy fundraiser!
Pint Size Hero Blood Drive Coming Our Way!
Coy Elementary School will sponsor a blood drive on March 20 from 2:30-7:30. Students will be learning about what it means to give blood. They will be encouraged to go home and speak with family and friends about donating blood. Family and friends of the student will have the opportunity to sign-up to help volunteer their time working the blood drive or to donate blood. Two years ago we were successful in collecting 26 units of blood amongst our parent/family/friend Coy community. Twenty-six units of blood equates to helping save 78 lives. This year our goal is set to collect 30 units of blood which could help to save 90 lives. Please help us with our goal this year and plan to donate!
