Dr. Zalar is the 8th superintendent of the Oregon City School district in Oregon Ohio. Before becoming superintendent in July of 2008, he served as the principal of Clay High School for five years. Dr. Zalar previously worked in a number of school districts prior to coming to Oregon in 2003. His teaching and leadership experience encompasses high school and junior high school, including both academic and career and technology fields of programming. He began his teaching career teaching comprehensive social studies at White Oak Jr. High and Aiken High School in the Cincinnati area before returning to northwest Ohio to teach Occupational Work Adjustment (OWA) at North Baltimore High School. He moved then accepted a position with Penta County Career Center as an Occupational Work Employment (OWE) instructor and later was prompted to become one of their vocational supervisors. He left Penta to become the principal of Patrick Henry High School which is where he remained before coming to Clay. His educational background includes an Associate Degree in Architectural Engineering from Owens Community College; a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Planning from the University of Toledo; a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Miami University; and a Doctorate in Educational Administration from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Zalar was selected to participate in a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship program which enabled him to travel to Africa for five weeks in 2005 to study the educational system of Tanzania. He also was selected to participate in the Oxford Roundtable program for scholars hosted at the University of Oxford in England. Dr. Zalar has been married to his wife Donna for twenty five years. Donna currently works as the Technology Coordinator for Lake Local Schools. Together, they have five children. His oldest son Alex is a senior at Miami University studying to be a math teacher. Noelle, his oldest daughter is a senior at the University of Toledo majoring in International Business with a minor in Spanish. Noelle recently accepted an appointment with the Peace Corps and is expected to be serving in central South America for the next two years. Paul is a senior at Clay High School and is planning on attending Miami University next year majoring in the health/medical field. Elana is currently a junior at Clay and is involved in student government and tennis. Teddy is a seventh grader at Eisenhower Middle School and is active in football, chess and club as well as Boy Scouts. Dr. Zalar enjoys all types of sports (especially golf and tennis) as well as reading, and traveling. He and his family regularly worship and attend church services at Hope Community Church in Oregon. Dr. Zalar continues to be impressed with the vision, dedication, commitment, and personal touch of the people who are the Oregon City School District. He is especially excited and proud to be a part of the Oregon team. |
