Fassett MS Principal's Message |
|

It is the time of year in which many of us make plans to give and when our focus is truly on others. We are blessed at Fassett to have students and families who think of others. The characteristic of the month for November was gratitude. We spoke repeatedly of what that word means and how it manifests itself. The students at Fassett showed gratitude for the things they have by donating cans and toys for the Oregon Food Basket and Toy Program. Thank you to all who participated! We are continuing the drive through December 16th.
We are happy to welcome home our sixth graders who just returned from a rewarding experience at Camp Michindoh. Camp offers many opportunities for growth, exploration and camaraderie. We are thankful for all who work so hard in order for our students to be given this opportunity.
Our focus continues to be on academics and developing the total child. We most definitely need the home connection to do the best job we can do. We are fortunate at Fassett to have that connection. We ask that parents continue to foster positive study habits in their children by doing the following: • Check agendas daily and review daily work with your child. When students explain what they are learning, it helps emphasize what they know and guides them to discover what they need yet to grasp. • Check grades regularly on the Parent Portal of Power School. Grades were updated on December 2nd. Future dates to check grades include February 3rd and 24th. The end of 2nd quarter is December 23rd and grade cards will come home on January 13. • Create a quiet study area and a consistent study time. • Help your child establish a “game plan” for what needs to be done and explain how to budget time to complete each portion of homework. We continue to teach these skills, as well as emphasize their importance to the students during our quarterly “Fassett Forums”.
We are initiating a new program, Option Success, for students who receive an F in any class during the second quarter. Please see the article attached to our web page.
We hope you can join us for our Band Concert and kick off your holidays on December 14th at 7:00 pm.
I truly hope your holiday season is filled with family, love, and enjoyment!
Yours in Education,
Tim Holcombe |

Fassett Parent Organization News |

We would first like to thank all the volunteers that helped at the Annual Fall Craft Show. We appreciated those who sent food in and/or helped that day, in addition to those who set up and cleaned up. We are thankful for your help.
Some people are wondering why we keep trying different fundraising efforts. We are attempting to replace the annual magazine sale at Fassett with a more lucrative and exciting fundraiser. We use these funds to directly provide assemblies, field day and other fun events for our students. If you have an idea about fundraising, please feel free to attend our next meeting on Monday, December 12th at 6:00 in the library.
Please note that there is a band concert on December 14th. We are looking for anyone interested in donating cookies, red Hawaiian Punch, and/or Sierra Mist/Sprite. If you can help donate an item or two, please contact Amy Contos, 419-351-5433.

Option Success: Fassett’s After-School Program to Combat F’s Factors that play into low self-esteem and poor decision making are failure and the feeling that nobody cares about you. Fassett’s second semester program, Option Success, will target those factors. Our goal is to aid in making positive choices to complete work and structure work habits in order to achieve.
Students will qualify for the program third quarter if they receive an F in any class during the second quarter. Students can also qualify at three week intervals if they are earning an F in any class at that time. They will be required to attend an after-school work session two times per week and there will be monitors present. Students will be taught strategies for prioritizing and planning for work completion and for time management. They will also make and execute a daily plan. The program will be tiered so a student can earn his/her way out after 3 weeks. Students who fail to show progress will extend their time to four days a week.
We anticipate this program to motivate some to complete work and study to avoid mandatory extended day and we anticipate the program to support others who need the daily structure and guidance. |

Safety Kids of Greater Ohio Parent Survey |
|
The Toledo Children’s Hospital received a 4-year grant from the Ohio Department of Health to focus on injury prevention among youth. A major focus of the injury prevention activities involves encouraging everyone involved in wheeled-sports to wear a properly fitted bike helmet. Safe Kids Greater Toledo , together with the Safe Routes to School staff, has offered various fun and educational activities for the students of Oregon.
The attached “Oregon Parent/Caregiver Survey” for the parent/caregivers of Fassett students is intended to gauge the level of interest within the community to consider the potential opportunity for a helmet policy.
Please click on the following link to complete the brief survey at Survey Monkey.

Fall Sports Season Celebrated |
|
On the evening of November 9th, we celebrated the fall sports season with a crowd that jammed the cafeteria. Mr. Vine mentioned that it was the biggest crowd in memory, and his memory of these events goes back to 1978! There was much to celebrate as our athletes conducted themselves extremely well on and off the fields of play.
The seventh grade girls volleyball team finished 16-4 with 3 of their losses coming to undefeated Eisenhower. The Vikings and Eisenhower were the class of the league and battled in the tournament championship. We enjoyed watching them under the guidance of Coach Claydon and are excited to watch these student-athletes continue their development as volleyball players!
The seventh grade football team capped off an impressive 8—0 season! This marks the first time, since the season expanded to 8 games this year, that any middle school team has finished 8—0. Guided by Coach Kidd and Coach Reindel, the Vikings posted impressive game after impressive game and let their work ethic speak for itself. Congratulations, Vikings.
