Attendance Policy Review

We would like to thank you for reinforcing good attendance habits with your child.  As you know, excessive absences result in missed class work and instruction that can be very difficult to make up.  In addition, an apathetic attitude can emerge from missing school that can ultimately lead to failure.

There are procedures we use in dealing with absences.  Absences are divided into “excused” and “unexcused.”   Our attendance policy focuses on absences being excused.  They can be:
• Parent Excused – Three parent excused absences are permitted each quarter.  A note or phone call must be received in order for the absence to be marked excused.
• Medical Excused – Doctor’s notes will excuse an absence.
• Family illness, quarantines, deaths in the family, religious observances
• Emergency circumstances – please contact principal for determination
• Family Vacation – A vacation form must be filled out prior to the vacation.  A vacation may be approved for up to five days per school calendar year.  Students with excessive absences and/or grades below a “C” may be denied.

The majority of our unexcused absences come from:
1. No note or phone call
2. Exceeding three parent-excused absences per quarter.  After your three parent-excused absences per quarter, a doctor’s note is required.

Letters are sent after three unexcused absences.  After five, a conference with the principal is required.  At ten unexcused days, there  will be a referral to a diversion hearing.  Charges will be filed at 15 unexcused absences.

If you ever have questions concerning the attendance policy, please call Ms. Fleitz or Mr. Holcombe at 419.693.0455.
