K-12 Services Overview Print E-mail

Program options and services must vary as children change, progressing from elementary to middle to high school. However, there are some services that are provided consistently in all grades K-12. This offers stability and cohesiveness to the total gifted and talented program.

Identification

Ohio Revised Code 3301-51-15 provides guidelines for identifying students in four different categories:

  • superior cognitive ability
  • specific academic ability
  • creative thinking ability
  • visual/performing arts

Ohio Revised Code 3313.21 mandates that students be identified annually according to these guidelines. In addition, a count of students receiving services must be made, with a numerical report filed annually with the State Department of Education. Formal programs for gifted and talented students are not mandated by the state or federal government.

Consultation

The coordinator of the gifted and talented program is available to meet with teachers and parents to help plan appropriate experiences for gifted and talented students.

In-Service Opportunities

Every year, our district offers a variety of in-service opportunities that focus on appropriate services for gifted and talented students. Teachers receive announcements of these workshops and may receive credit for attending.

Parent Support Group

The parent support group for gifted and talented students provide information through meetings, speakers and newsletters.

Essential (Regular) Classroom Teachers

Teachers in our district are involved in the identification process and are aware, through their coordinator, of the students who have been identified. In addition, students in all grades are exposed to enrichment activities designed by these teachers and delivered through the essential (regular) classroom setting.

Modifications in Scheduling

Each student's abilities and needs are considered when schedules are designed. If the identified needs cannot be met through the grade level curriculum, the schedule can be modified. Students can participate in classes at other grade levels; for certain special circumstances, students have been transported to one of our middle schools and/or high school to provide a more appropriate offering.
