DARE Graduation
On May 20, the Jerusalem Fifth graders were honored in a DARE graduation ceremony.
DARE is the Drug Abuse Resistance Education that is taught by Oregon City Resource Officer Sara Shaw to all fifth graders. Students learned about resisting drugs and alcohol, as well as how to handle peer pressure, bullying, and internet safety. A final DARE report was required by each student. Class representatives, chosen by their peers, read their DARE reports at the graduation ceremony. Our 2011 representatives were Breanna Batch, Emilie Gorajewski, Zach Groll, and Mason Schroeder. Congratulations to all 52 graduates!

Second Graders are Busy!
Jerusalem’s 2nd graders have been busy creating autobiographies. For two weeks, we had parents help us remember facts from each year of our lives, which we compiled into paragraphs during our writing lessons at school. The project was complete when we created a ‘person’ to display with our life stories. Our lives have been pretty exciting so far!

Whoooo’s Working Hard in Science and Reading?
Fourth grade Jerusalem students enjoyed reading the humorous novel Owls in the Family by Farely Mowat. Science students then investigated the eating habits of owls by dissecting owl pellets! They found intact skulls and bones of birds, rodents, shrews, and moles. After separating the bones from the pellets, the bones were sorted to aid with classification. The students thought this activity was interesting. Wyatt Thompson said, “It was pretty cool,” while Brodi Belinski commented, “It was fun, but it smelled bad.”

We Love our Volunteers
On Wednesday, May 11, Jerusalem teachers hosted a breakfast for our volunteers. There were 20 volunteers in attendance. Guests were treated to homemade breakfast casseroles, assorted pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. Each volunteer was also presented with a small gift as a token of appreciation. At Jerusalem, we really appreciate the time and effort given by our volunteers. Our school wouldn’t be the same without its partnership between the teachers and these wonderful helpers! Together, we strive to provide the best education to our students possible. THANK YOU!!!
