The Board of Education of the Oregon City School District met for an organizational session of the 8th day of January, 2009, at 6:00p.m. in the Clay High School Media Center, 5665 Seaman Road, Oregon, Ohio.  Diane Karoly, President Pro Tem called the meeting to order, led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and asked that the family of Bradley Soncrant be remembered in a moment of silence.  The following members answered roll call:  Mrs. Carstensen, Mr. Gabel, Mrs. Karoly, Mr. Ziviski, and Mr. Heintschel.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Mrs. Karoly nominated, Mr. Ziviski to be Board President.  Mrs. Carstensen nominated Mr. Heintschel to another term as Board President.

Mrs. Carstensen made a statement that personal agendas do not belong on school boards. Personal agendas can get in the way of doing what is in the best interest of students.  She expressed disappointment in the Board’s perceived lack of regard for directives provided by District consultant. 

Upon roll call the votes were as follows:

Mrs. Carstensen - Mr. Heintschel
Mr. Gabel – Mr. Ziviski
Mrs. Karoly – Mr. Ziviski
Mr. Ziviski – Mr. Ziviski
Mr. Heintschel – Mr. Heintschel

The President ProTem declared Mr. Ziviski the Board President.

Mr. Gabel, Mrs. Karoly and Mr. Ziviski expressed thanks to Mr. Heintschel for doing such a good job as Board President the previous year and made it clear the vote was not a reflection of how the job was handled but that the Board likes to pass the presidency throughout the board members.

Mr. Ziviski nominated Mrs. Karoly to be Board Vice President.

Upon roll call all members voted yes.   Mrs. Karoly was elected as Vice President.

Newly elected Board President presided over the remainder of organizational meeting.

Oregon Board of Education will hold 2009 meetings at the Clay High School Media Center on the second Tuesday and fourth Wednesday of every month at 6:00p.m.

Mrs. Carstensen made a motion, seconded by Mr. Heintschel to continue the Board’s Service Fund as appropriated last November and provided by Ohio Revised Code, Section 3315.15.

Upon roll call all members voted yes, the President declared the motion passed.

Board Members were appointed to leadership positions as follows:

Betty Carstensen - Legislative Liaison to Ohio School Boards Association

Diane Karoly - Student Achievement Liaison

Eric Heintschel - Recreation Board Representative

Mrs. Carstensen made a motion, seconded by Mr. Gabel to continue using Spengler Nathanson as legal counsel and Gary Breier for local issues.  Peck, Shaffer and Williams, Columbus, Ohio will represent the district as bond counsel.  Bricker and Eckler will help with levy issues.

Discussion followed regarding the need to evaluate law firms during the upcoming year. 

Upon roll call all members voted yes, the President declared the motion passed.

Mr. Heintschel made a motion, seconded by Mrs. Carstensen to close the organizational meeting.  Upon roll call all members voted yes.  Meeting was adjourned at 6:25p.m.
