Starr Elementary Principal's Message |
|
Welcome to Starr Elementary School, Home of the Bulldogs, where our staff, students, and community are committed to promoting academic achievement and positive social interactions through high expectations for students in an environment conducive to learning.
We believe that all children can learn. The Starr staff provides a structured environment in which teachers are free to teach and students have the maximum opportunity to learn. Our goal is to reach the highest individual level of academic achievement and social growth for each child.
Cooperation and team work between the school and home are essential in meeting the goals of academic achievement and positive social interactions. We can all be successful when we work as a team of parents, students, and staff. Feel free to contact me any time with questions, concerns, or suggestions. I welcome your input into our learning community and am looking forward to a terrific year.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Conkle, Principal (419) 693-0589

Can you believe that February 2nd marked the 100th day of school? Many classrooms participated in special activities on this day in celebration of this major milestone!

Last year near our 100th day of school, the students had read nearly 10,000 books in the Accelerated Reader (A.R.) Program. This year we are almost at 13,500 books. This translates to over 64,500,000 words. This is quite an accomplishment. Way to go Starr Bulldog Readers! Watch our numbers grow by visiting our website regularly and checking out the AR counter on the right hand side. During the week of March 5th, students in grades 3 and 5 will be taking the Stanford 10. The Stanford 10 is a norm referenced test. Norm-referenced tests compare a person's score against the scores of a group of people who have already taken the same test. The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) will be administered Thursday, March 1st, once again, to students in grades 3 and 5. This a test that measures the abstract thinking and reasoning of children. Both assessments are multiple choice. It is very important that your child do his or her best on these assessments as educational programming decisions are made based on the results. The majority of these tests will be administered in the morning. Please try and avoid scheduling appointments on testing days and please have your child to school promptly. It is also to your child's advantage to have a good night's sleep and breakfast on testing days. If you ever have an address, phone number, or emergency contact information change, be sure to remember to inform us when those changes occur. These items are critical in the event of an illness or medical emergency. Thank you for keeping us in the loop. Last quarter Starr earned $49.70 in the Gordon Food’s Fun Funds program. Patrons can sign up with Gordon Foods and designate Starr as their organization of choice. Every time you make a purchase, Gordon’s donates a percentage of the cost to Starr Elementary. Our organization number is 2367072. You can go to the following website to sign-up for the program online. http://www.gfs.com/funfunds/home.page?OrgNumber=2367072 The program costs the consumer nothing to sign up for but is a great way to support our school.

Getting your child home safely is a top priority for Oregon City Schools. I can't stress to you enough the importance of informing your child's teacher of how you want your child to get home at the end of the day. If there is going to be a change in your child's transportation arrangements, it is of utmost importance that you make these arrangements known to your child's teacher. The best thing to do is write your child's teacher a note. You can also leave a message for your child's teacher on his or her voice mail. Please make your child's teacher aware of the transportation change as soon as possible. While we understand that there may be circumstances beyond your control that require you to inform us of a transportation change near the end of the day, make every effort to contact the school by 12:00. Please note that we will not change the way in which your child is going home without confirmation from you.
