Oregon City Schools and Starr Elementary are excited to expand the use of Accelerated Reader (AR).  This program is designed to motivate students to read, read, read!

Here's how AR works:
1. Students select and read library books that match their individual ability levels and interests.  Students should choose books within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).  The ZPD is determined by a Star Reading Assessment.  Your child's teacher and Starr's librarian will show him/her how to find books in his/her range.  
2. When a student finishes a book, he/she takes an AR Reading Practice Quiz on the computer at school.  This quiz assesses general comprehension on the book just read.
3. Accelerated Reader scores the quiz, keeps track of the results, and generates reports.

When students take and pass AR quizzes they are recognized for their success.  Below are the grade level incentives the district has put in place.  
*Kindergarten and First Grade - Students will receive a necklace and dog tag for the first two reading practice quizzes passed.  They will receive additional charms for every two additional quizzes passed.
*Second Grade - Students will receive a necklace and dog tag for the first three reading practice quizzes passed.  They will receive additional charms for every four additional quizzes passed.  
*Third - Fifth Grade - Students will receive a necklace and dog tag for the first five points earned.  They will receive additional charms for every five points earned.  

You can be an active part of your child's reading life in two ways.  You can check the ZPD's of books at the library or books you have at home by logging onto www.arbookfind.com.  The public library has computers with internet access to allow you to check books your child would like to read.  You can also find out what books your child has read and their quiz results by logging onto Renaissance Home Connect.
