February Newsletter
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It’s February and hopefully the snow and cold moves away and we begin to see a glimpse of sunshine and spring right around the corner.
This is the time of year where we begin gearing up in preparation for the achievement tests. Our 7th graders will be tested March 1- March 8th. The students will be administered the Stanford 10 and OLSAT 8. Please remind your child that they need to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast during testing week. We have also been working very hard with our students to prepare them for the OAA (Ohio Achievement Assessment). This test will be administered April 26-28, 2010.
On February 25, 2010, students will attend assemblies present by the American Red Cross about its’ upcoming Blood Drive, Pint Size Hero. The program encourages students to volunteer at the blood drive and invite parents, guardians and other adults to give blood on their behalf. At the assemblies, students will receive information about the program and a Blood Donor Response Card to take home. Please ask your student for this important information! The Blood Drive is March 25, 2010 at Eisenhower.

Sexting, FaceBook, MySpace... - Do You Know What Your Child is Doing Online? Learn What You Need to Know!
The Oregon City Schools is hosting an informational forum on social networking on March 1, 2010. The forum will begin at 7:00pm in the Clay High School Library. Our goal is to educate parents of K-12 students about sexting, Facebook, MySpace and what many children are doing on their phones and computers. If you think your child is too young, you might be surprised. Representatives from the Oregon Police Department and the Lucas County Prosecutor's office will share examples of how students put themselves in danger using their computers and cell phones. District teacher, Amy Sweet, will show parents how to see what their children are doing and how to help protect their children from online predators. If you are a parent and not overly familiar with social networking, you won't want to miss this informational forum. It will help you become better acquainted with the technology your sons/daughters are growing up with as part of their daily lives.
For questions about the forum please contact Nathan Quigg, Technology Director of Oregon City Schools, via e-mail at nquigg@oregoncs.org.

Backpass Express
Backpack Express
As you may know, spring is state testing time for our schools. Students in grades 3-8 and grade 10 will all be taking mandatory tests to demonstrate their abilities in the various academic areas of instruction. Students will continue to receive great instruction by their individual classroom teachers; and the majority of students do pass the tests they are given, but for those who struggle in any particular curricular area, additional tutoring and guidance is necessary. This additional help is limited by our financial situation.

Manage Your Child's Lunch Account Online - Now Active!
As part of our ongoing efforts to communicate effectively with parents and increase operational efficiencies, Oregon City Schools is now offering parents online access to student lunch accounts. Parents can use their credit or debit card for the transaction. Use of the system is voluntary. Students will still be able to pay in cash at lunch. Parents who use the on-line system must first create an account. They will need their student’s ID number to complete the online registration. No personal information about students is available online. As an added security measure, the district does not store credit card information. Users will need to enter this information each time they use the site. Read more...
