Fassett MS Principal's Message

February is not only the heart of the third quarter, but also marks the change where we begin to transition into next school year. Eighth grade students are beginning to register for high school courses and the master schedule for Fassett is being formulated. It is exciting to look to the future, but also important that we maintain focus on finishing this school year with growth and progress.
I continue to be pleased with student growth, both academically and behaviorally. Many of the character traits we have talked about with students from the beginning of the year are finding their way through daily life in the hallways of Fassett. Thank you parents, staff members, and community members for your positive influence on Fassett students!
Honesty is the character trait for February. Part of our mantra this school year for our students is to: 1. own your decisions / take responsibility for your decisions 2. pay your consequence 3. change your behavior. These steps seem extremely simple and straight forward, but require much practice. They also flow into the character trait of honesty. We will continue to talk to students about honestly assessing their behaviors and thought processes. After being honest with themselves about their role in situations, they will be able to easily be honest with others.
Two quotes we will be using this month are: “Truth often hurts, but it’s the lie that leaves the scar.” (Anonymous) “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” (Mark Twain) As always, thank you for your positive involvement at Fassett!
Sincerely, Tim Holcombe

Sexting, FaceBook, MySpace... - Do You Know What Your Child is Doing Online? Learn What You Need to Know!
The Oregon City Schools is hosting an informational forum on social networking on March 1, 2010. The forum will begin at 7:00pm in the Clay High School Library. Our goal is to educate parents of K-12 students about sexting, Facebook, MySpace and what many children are doing on their phones and computers. If you think your child is too young, you might be surprised. Representatives from the Oregon Police Department and the Lucas County Prosecutor's office will share examples of how students put themselves in danger using their computers and cell phones. District teacher, Amy Sweet, will show parents how to see what their children are doing and how to help protect their children from online predators. If you are a parent and not overly familiar with social networking, you won't want to miss this informational forum. It will help you become better acquainted with the technology your sons/daughters are growing up with as part of their daily lives.
For questions about the forum please contact Nathan Quigg, Technology Director of Oregon City Schools, via e-mail at nquigg@oregoncs.org.

Bugsy Malone Jr. Forty energetic and talented middle school students at Fassett have transported themselves back to the roaring twenties with this year’s musical, Bugsy Malone Jr. But don’t worry; this isn’t your ordinary gangster story. The “Sopranos” in this story are really sopranos! The musical, based on the 1976 movie starring Scott Baio and Jody Foster is a tongue and cheek tribute to the jazz age, with ice cream served at the speak easy, and gangsters “splurging” each other with guns that shoot silly string. It seems Fat Sam (Jacob Harrison), who runs one of the most popular clubs in town, is in danger of being closed down by Dandy Danielle (Alison Susor) and her menacing all female gang (Danielle Lorenzen, Jessy Bohland, Paige Arman, Shannon Barney, and Cooper Isbell). Enter baby-faced Bugsy Malone (Maxx Gordon), a killer with the ladies and a definite asset to Fat Sam. Unfortunately, Bugsy has also caught the eye of Sam’s girlfriend Tallulah (Mariah McDougle) - though he’s set his designs on showgirl Blousy Brown (Taylor Daniel). Add Fat Sam’s not so bright gang (Connor Rheinbolt, Jared Miller, Jared Jacob, and Ben McCoy), some show girls (Courtney Quinlan, Madison Phillips, Alyssa Fussell, Hannah Kesling, and Harleigh Isbell), and a honky tonk score by composer Paul Williams, and you won’t be able to contain your laughter, or stop tapping your toes! Angela Cooney, 6th grade teacher at Fassett, has put together a talented production team that includes Fassett colleague Karen Angst as musical director, Lisa Gordon as director, Bridget Harrington and Heather Klatt as choreographers, as well as a host of parent and student volunteers. “We are especially grateful to Oregon Community Theater for their unending encouragement and support,” Mrs. Cooney explained, “ Their expertise has allowed us to put on shows here at Fassett that rival many high school productions.” Show dates are March, 26th, 27th, and 28th. Curtain times are 7:30 for Friday and Saturday’s performance, and 3:00 for Sunday’s matinee. Cost is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students and seniors. Reserved tickets go on sale at Fassett Middle School on March 1st , and can also be purchased at the door. Be sure to bring the whole family for this enjoyable evening of jazz, jokes, and hijinks.
