Parents and Guardians,

Clay High School students are quickly approaching the final quarter of the school year. By this time, students should be experiencing success--success shown by making progress toward graduation and by earning successful grades in their courses. The vast majority of our students have experienced success and are doing well academically.

However, we also have some students who are not successful, students in all grades who are not making progress toward graduation, but instead, are earning poor grades. Unfortunately, there are students who allow poor attendance and discipline issues to block their way toward academic progress. Administrators and teachers are eager to team with parents, to assist students experiencing problems, and to help families get students back on the track toward success. Let’s work together, discuss individual problems or concerns, and devise a plan to make your son or daughter--if he or she is experiencing difficulty--successful in every endeavor he or she undertakes at Clay High School.
March is Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) month. The OGT is the graduation test required by the state of Ohio, and will be given the week of March 15-19. All sophomores are required to take the test, as well as juniors and seniors who have not yet passed all of five areas--reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Passing the OGT is an extremely important hurdle all students must clear on their road to graduation.
To give your son or daughter additional OGT practice at home, you may visit Ohio’s state-wide testing site, which can be accessed at http://ogt.success-ode-state-oh-us.info. If your student is taking the OGT in March, please emphasize the importance of doing his or her best on each test. Make sure the student gets a good night’s rest and eats breakfast before coming to school. The purpose of Ohio’s graduation test is to ensure that students are armed with the knowledge they need in this global economy to be successful both in the work force and in higher education.
Clay will be on a special schedule for that testing week. All freshmen and sophomores will remain in school the entire day for the entire week.  Sophomores and the few juniors and seniors who still need to pass the test will take the required OGT, while all freshmen will take a practice OGT in preparation for the required test during their sophomore year. All juniors and seniors who have already passed the OGT will be permitted to leave each day at 11 a.m.
All Clay students (except those who have been absent during the past two weeks) have scheduled classes for the next school year.  I believe it is very important to discuss with your child the courses he or she has chosen to take. It is our goal to provide each of our students with the class schedule that they desire. Please see your child’s counselor before June 1 if changes or corrections need to be made.
Thank you for believing in Oregon City Schools, and for trusting Clay with the education of your child. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter, and for allowing me the privilege of being your principal.
