Scholarships are usually free money that will pay for a couple of books, or could pay for your entire college experience.  How do you get them?  Well, the answer is, look everywhere.

Merit Based Scholarships

The term merit implies that the student has a special skill, one that the prospective university has a desire to recruit..  The common view of such scholarships is that are given as athletic scholarships, and this is still the most visible type that are given.   However, many universities now grant full and partial scholarships that are greater in dollar amounts that are granted to athletics.

Local agencies, places of work, clubs, churches, schools (including Clay High that gives many scholarships each year) give much money each year based on a variety of factors.  Good grades, volunteer work, musical talent, outstanding student/community leaders/citizens, are just a few of the distinguishing factors that groups are looking for in students.  Keep your eyes and ears open.

Local Scholarships

The Clay High Guidance staff regularly publishes a scholarship list of any scholarship that we become aware of.  They come from many agencies, businesses, philanthropic and community service groups. Scholarships are available in large part to seniors only, but we get a considerable number for any student regardless of grade level. All of our students should check the scholarship postings on a weekly basis and apply to any that they qualify for.

There are many local/regional scholarships in December, January, and February.  Come in to the Pfeiffer Guidance Center for the updated list.

Parents-check with your employer, your church, civic organization, etc. for scholarship opportunities.

Clay High Scholarships

The citizens and organizations of Oregon and Jerusalem Township have at the forefront of providing scholarships for Clay High graduates.  Many people and organizations have generously given their time and money assisting our seniors on to college.  Each March the scholarship applications are distributed to all of the seniors.  These scholarships, along with all others received by the seniors, are awarded at the annual Senior Honor’s Night in May.  Check the calendar for the date and time.

NEED BASED SCHOLARSHIPS

Financial assistance is based on the need of the student.  Federal, State, and college scholarships are almost always based first on the FAFSA report (go back to the Guidance home page and select FAFSA).  The best way to be eligible is to apply to the college early, contact the Financial Aid office early and often, make sure your resume is updated, and make a good impression at any interviews you might have with the Financial Aid/Admissions offices.
