Welcome to the Department of Teaching and Learning!
The staff of the Department of Teaching and Learning is passionate about its mission to help all students and teachers see their hard work lead to student success in college and/or a career. It is our privilege and responsibility to help all students become critical thinkers and problem solvers, able to adapt efficiently to a rapidly changing world. We believe that given the right tools, teaching, and time, all students can be successful.
One of our primary responsibilities is to coordinate the adoption and implementation of curriculum materials and instructional practices that enable students to meet the demands of Ohio’s New Learning Standards. Going far beyond simply buying textbooks, these decisions also involve the use of technology-based tools such as Study Island, Accelerated Reader, Kindle novels on junior high iPads, and STAR math assessments.
While essential to classroom instruction, materials are really only tools. Their effectiveness is dependent on the skill of the teachers who use them. Our office supports rigorous and relevant teaching by providing high-quality professional development (PD) for our teachers and administrators. In addition to excellent professional development provided by the OCS Technology Department, we provide PD in research-backed practices such as the Daily 5 Literacy Framework, high quality assessment design, and formative assessment.
Our department also ensures that all students receive the right kind and amount of excellent instruction to meet their needs. Our Gifted and Talented programs provide instructional services to students who need to go more quickly or deeply into academic content. Extra instruction to help students meet grade level expectations is provided in our Response to Intervention (RTI) process and Title 1 programs. And our English Language Learner services provide our ELL students specialized instruction and time to learn crucial English language skills and vocabulary.
Just as we believe all students can learn, we also believe learning is essential to being good teachers and administrators. We’d love to hear your thoughts about teaching and learning, as well as share any information you may need. If you have any questions about any of these areas, we invite you to come by our office in the OCS Administration. You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call at 419.698.6000, ext. 3295.
