What is Oregon School’s doing about the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)?
Please read and review the attached letter from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department concerning information regarding the H1N1 flu virus.  The Health Department is providing guidance and assistance to local school districts as a precautionary measure in an effort to minimize any potential impact of the virus.  To that effect, Health Commissioner, Dr. David Grossman, is encouraging parents to have their children vaccinated against the H1N1 virus once the vaccination is available.    The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department has asked school districts to serve as vaccination sites in an effort to provide the vaccinations in a cost effective and timely manner.   It is important to understand that the vaccination will be voluntary and require parental consent.  During the course of the next several weeks, The Oregon City School District will be developing a system that will facilitate the implementation of this process.

It is important that we do everything we can to reduce the spread of H1N1 and other flu related viruses.  This calls for increased attention to basic hygiene habits at home and at school.  Reinforcing the following health protocols will assist greatly in this prevention strategy:

  • Stay home when sick.  Students with flu-like symptoms (i.e. fever of 100 degrees, body aches, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffed nose, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea) should stay home and remain home at least 24 hrs. after they no longer have a fever.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Block sneezes and coughs into a tissue, elbow, or sleeve instead of the hand.
  • Do not share personal items such as utensils, drinks and food items.

The Oregon City School District is committed to providing a clean and safe environment for all students.  Our staff will be emphasizing these preventive strategies with your children.  In addition, we are focusing our cleaning efforts in high contact areas such as classrooms and other gathering locations.  We are also working in close contact with the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department and will be sending out additional information to update parents and staff as this information becomes available.

Action Steps for Parents to Protect Your Child and Family from the Flu this School Year
Action Steps for Parents of Children at High Risk for Flu Complications

We currently have two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in our district.  Both children are students at Fassett Middle School.  The district has been proactive in taking steps to prevent the spread of the H1N1 flu virus including an educational campaign that emphasizes hand washing, the recognition of signs and symptoms of the flu, and how to respond in case of illness.  In addition, we have initiated additional cleaning measures in our classrooms and buildings and are working closely with the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department in order to monitor the flu outbreak. We will continue to make decisions based on the best interests of students.

The Oregon City Schools will continue to remain open and operating.  We encourage anyone with flu like symptoms to stay home for rest and care.  Staff or students should not return to school until they have a fever of less than 100 degrees for at least 24 hrs (without fever reducing medication).  As always, we encourage parents to monitor their children’s health, watching for symptoms noted below.  Students with fevers should remain at home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours.  According to the CDC, people who have been exposed to the virus should monitor themselves for symptoms for the next seven days.  At this time, neither closing school nor isolating is recommended.  Students without symptoms should be at school.

For specific information on the H1N1 flu go to the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov), or the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department (www.co.lucas.oh.us/health).

Because the information below may help to inhibit the spread of illness among students and staff, please take time to review the information below.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
Among the recommended guidelines are to:

  • Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with your sleeve or a tissue; and,
  • Make sure your child stays home if they feel sick.
  • Have disposable tissues available for use.
  • Have a fever thermometer ready to use

In addition, should your child feel ill, each of our school buildings has a medically trained staff member who is available to identify flu symptoms.

Specific symptoms of H1N1 include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea. We offer more information on H1N1 on our Web site at: http://www.oregoncityschools.org/images/stories/docs/District%20Documents/h1n1powerpoint.pdf

PROCEDURES FOR FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS
Should you or any one in your home feel ill whether at school or in your home, please follow the following guidelines.  These guidelines are in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control Recommended School Response Guidelines for the 2009-2010 School Year and the Lucas County Health Department.
• Students and staff who have an ill household member should monitor themselves for the symptoms described above for seven days from the day the first household member got sick. This is the time period they are most likely to get sick themselves.
• Those with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines. They should stay home even if they are using antiviral drugs.
• Students and staff who appear to have flu-like illness at the school will be sent to a room separate from others until they can be sent home. CDC recommends that they wear a surgical mask, if possible, and that those who care for ill students and staff wear protective gear such as a mask.
• School staff will routinely clean areas that students and staff touch often with the cleaners they typically use. Although the CDC does not believe any additional disinfection of environmental surfaces beyond the recommended routine cleaning is required, the district takes extra steps to ensure all surfaces are disinfected on a regular basis.

If you have any further questions, please call Cherie Sexton at 419.693.0455, ext. 2007 or Dawn Henry, 419.698.6000, ext. 3295.
