Superintendent’s Message

Welcome Back!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!  This promises to be one of the best years in the history of the Oregon School District.  The summer months have been very busy for our maintenance and custodial staff as they have worked hard to ensure that everything will be ready when your child arrives to school on their first day(see Summer Projects Completed).

PowerSchool Replacing eSIS Print E-mail

The district staff, students and parents were just getting used to the “new” student information system, eSIS.  Then AAL eSIS was purchased mid-year by Pearson.  Support for eSIS will be eliminated next year, forcing the district to switch to another new student information system.  Oregon City Schools is currently in the process of switching from eSIS to Pearson PowerSchool.  According to Technology Director, Nathan Quigg, “PowerSchool is a much better program.  I believe staff, students and parents will find it more user-friendly than eSIS.”

ATTENTION PARENTS Print E-mail

State law requires schools to identify gifted students according to standards set by the Ohio Department of Education. The State of Ohio recognizes four areas of Giftedness. These areas are superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking ability, and visual and/or performing arts ability. Each of these abilities has different test requirements and different score requirements. The entire process is very lengthy and complicated.

In the spring of 2011 all students in grades 3, 5 & 7 were given the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and the Stanford Achievement Tests. These tests are part of the multi-factored criteria necessary for gifted identification in the State of Ohio. After all the results were in and tabulated, parents of children qualifying in any of the categories listed above have been notified by personal letter from the Coordinator of Gifted Education.

Students in K, 1, 2, 4, 6 & 8 are evaluated through the building referral process. If you have any questions about gifted education please call Tammy Swartz, 693-0665 ext. 2044.
